Every year during the first weekend of May, the Tampa Riverwalk turns into one of the largest free festivals in the city. Tampa Riverfest, presented by Publix Super Markets, is a two-day celebration that stretches the full 2.6-mile length of the Riverwalk, filling the parks, plazas, and waterfront spaces along the Hillsborough River with food, live music, and a packed schedule of activities. The 2026 event falls on May 1st and 2nd, and this year marks the festival's 10th anniversary.

The whole event is free to attend, though a few specific food experiences require a ticket or wristband.

Friday Night Events

Friday night kicks off at 5:00pm with live music, vendors, and food and drinks, plus Taste of the Riverwalk, running from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. This is the festival's food-focused evening, where local Tampa restaurants set up along the Riverwalk and serve samples of some of their best dishes. A wristband is required to access the food tent area, and tickets can be reserved online in advance. Taste of the Riverwalk wristbands are $20 for 3 tastes or $25 for 5.

Live music runs alongside the food on the main stage at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, with a lineup of regional and local bands performing throughout the evening. At sunset, the first of the festival's two balloon glows lights up the park, with hot air balloons inflated and illuminated along the waterfront. It is one of the most photographed moments of the weekend.

Saturday Events

Saturday is the bigger of the two days and runs from morning into the night. The popular Taco Fest takes over on Saturday, with taco vendors lining the Riverwalk and offering everything from traditional street-style tacos to more creative takes. Taco Fest tickets are $20 to $25.

The rest of Saturday's schedule is free and packed with things to do:

  • Wiener Dog Derby — One of the festival's most popular events. Dachshunds race for the finish line and it draws a big crowd every year.

  • Lantern Parade — Starting at 8:30 p.m. and running until 10:00 p.m., participants decorate paper lanterns and walk in a procession that begins at Water Works Park in Tampa Heights and ends at Curtis Hixon Park. Lantern kits go on sale the day of the event from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Water Works Park.

  • Water Ski Show — This takes place on Saturday from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on the Hillsborough River, and the best views are from the Riverwalk near Water Works Park, close to Armature Works.

  • Paddle Invasion — Kayakers, paddle boarders, and other paddlers take to the Hillsborough River in a group outing.

  • Yoga in the Park — A morning session on the lawn, open to all levels.

  • Kids Zone — A newer addition to the festival, with activities designed for younger visitors.

  • Balloon Glow — Returns for a second night at sunset, closing out the weekend.

The main stage concert series continues all day Saturday with more live music at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park.

VIP Options

For those who want a more reserved experience, VIP tickets are available at $110 for Friday, $135 for Saturday, or $210 bundled for both days. The VIP tent offers a dedicated bar, shaded seating, and a good vantage point for the main stage.

Where It’s Happening

The festival is spread across the full Tampa Riverwalk, with most of the main events centered around Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park. The Lantern Parade and Water Ski Show are based closer to Water Works Park, at the northern end of the Riverwalk.

Parking downtown during Riverfest fills up fast. Several garages serve the area, including the Fort Brooke Garage at 107 N. Franklin Street and the Twiggs Garage at 901 E. Twiggs Street. The Pirate Water Taxi also runs stops along the Riverwalk and can be a good way to move between sections of the festival without walking the full route.

Making a Weekend Out of It

Riverfest falls at the start of May, when the weather in Tampa is warm and the water is ideal for being outside. If you are already planning to be in the area for the festival, it is worth building in a day on the water to round out the trip.

The Tampa Bay area has some of the best boating in Florida, with barrier islands, sandbars, and Gulf Coast beaches all within easy reach. Egmont Key, a state park accessible only by boat, sits at the mouth of Tampa Bay with pristine beaches, the remains of Fort Dade, and an 1858 lighthouse. Shell Key, Beer Can Island, and the sandbars near the Sunshine Skyway Bridge are all popular day-trip destinations from Tampa and St. Petersburg.

SeaEO Luxury Boat Charters operates private charters out of the Tampa Bay area, with captains who can put together an itinerary based on your group's interests. Whether that is a morning spent island hopping before the festival starts on Friday, or a full charter day on Sunday after the weekend wraps up, it pairs well with a Riverfest trip. You can explore charter options and book at sea-eo.com.
