The Rotary 4th of July Picnic & Fireworks Spectacular is Key West's signature Independence Day celebration, and the 2026 edition returns to Higgs Beach and Indigenous Park on Saturday, July 4 from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Presented by the Rotary Club of Key West, the event is open to everyone and brings together locals, visitors, families, and friends for one of the most laid-back Fourth of July celebrations in the Florida Keys.

What to Expect

The festivities start at 5:00 PM, when Higgs Beach transforms into an open-air gathering with food vendors serving a mix of classic picnic fare and island flavors. Live bands and entertainers perform throughout the evening, and there are games and activities spread across the grounds for families and kids.

The main event starts after sunset. Fireworks are launched from the Edward B. Knight Pier, known locally as the White Street Pier, and explode over the Atlantic Ocean. The show typically begins around 9:00 PM. Because the fireworks are launched from a pier that extends out over the water, the display reflects off the surface of the ocean, which adds a layer to the experience that inland shows can not replicate.

Where It Takes Place

Higgs Beach sits on the south side of Key West along Atlantic Boulevard, with Indigenous Park adjacent to it. The beach and park together create a wide, open area with both sand and grassy lawn for setting up blankets, chairs, and picnic spreads. The Edward B. Knight Pier extends from the eastern end of the beach, putting the fireworks launch point right in front of the main viewing area.

If you want a good spot on the sand or the lawn, arrive early. The beach fills up well before the fireworks start, and the best positions go to people who settle in during the first hour of the event. Bringing a blanket, a low chair, and a cooler with drinks and snacks is the standard approach.

About the Rotary Club

The event is organized by the Rotary Club of Key West with support from local sponsors and civic partners including the City of Key West, Monroe County, Key West International Airport, and the Greater Key West Chamber of Commerce. Rotary volunteers run the event on the ground, and proceeds from food sales, raffles, and donations go toward Rotary scholarships and community service projects throughout the Florida Keys. Attending is free, and spending money at the event puts dollars back into the local community.

Watching the Fireworks from the Water

The fireworks are launched from a pier that extends directly over the ocean, which means the display is designed to be seen from the water as much as from the shore. Watching from a boat gives you a wide, unobstructed view of the full show, with the explosions reflected across the surface of the Atlantic and the glow of the Key West shoreline behind you. There are no crowds, no jockeying for position, and no packing up in the dark afterward. You are already on the water, already comfortable, and already in the best seat available.

This is one of the most popular charter nights of the year in Key West, and for good reason.

July 4th Weekend in Key West

The Fourth of July falls on a Saturday in 2026, which makes it easy to build a long weekend around the holiday. Key West in early July is warm, the water is clear, and the island is in full summer mode.

If you are already planning to be in Key West for the fireworks, a charter earlier in the day or on a surrounding day is a natural addition to the trip. A morning spent snorkeling the reef, an afternoon anchored at a sandbar, or a sunset cruise on the evening before the Fourth all pair well with the celebration. For groups that want to go bigger, a full-day charter to the Dry Tortugas on July 3rd or 5th turns the holiday weekend into something your group will be talking about for years.

Celebrate the Fourth with Us

We operate private charters out of Key West and throughout the Florida Keys, and the Fourth of July is one of our busiest and most requested dates of the year. Our captains can plan a charter around the fireworks, whether that means a sunset cruise that positions you on the water in time for the show, a full-day outing that wraps up with a front-row fireworks view, or a standalone evening charter timed specifically for the display.

Our boat, the Axopar 37 XC Cross Cabin, holds up to 13 guests plus the captain. It has an enclosed cabin, a full bathroom, sunbeds, a Bluetooth sound system, and comfortable seating throughout, which means your group has everything it needs for a full evening on the water.

Fourth of July charters book early. If you are planning to be in Key West for the holiday, we recommend reserving your date as far in advance as possible.
